In the first of a new illustrative series for 2022, The Race Around will be showcasing the great designs and stories from across the Class40 offshore racing category like never before. Introducing Class40 Reimagined!
Every fortnight, we’ll reveal a highly artistic, beautifully illustrated take on a Class40 competitor, celebrating the vibrant colours, ground-breaking designs and unique characters seen across our sport - from brand new entrants and seasoned amateurs to the best and most renowned competitors around.
First up is one of the most striking Class40's in the fleet - newcomers La Boulangère Bio, skippered by Amélie Grassi.
Law student Grassi made offshore sailing her full-time commitment four years ago ahead of entering the Mini Transat for the 2019 season, where she rounded out a hugely impressive 8th overall.
Her success caught the eye of Christophe Aillet, General Manager of La Boulangère, the famous French bakery, who were title partner of the Mini Transat at the time. The rest, as they say, is history - and the pair collaborated to launch their very own Class40 in 2021.
In November, it contested its first major race, as Grassi and her co-skipper Marie Riou entered the Transat Jacques Vabre as one of the race's only all-female line-ups.
Remarkably, they finished 9th after just 22 days at sea, and less than six hours behind winner and eventual Class40 Champion Antoine Carpentier in his Redman, to cap a stunning debut in a major race.
With its fantastic early life achievements and eye-catching red and white colour scheme - La Boulangère Bio provides a fitting start to our new series celebrating the unique tales of Class40.
Stay tuned later in the month for the next edition!
